Dr. Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, President
The unimaginably unhealthy environment and unhygienic practice are the inevitable curse of poverty. Then in the forties and fifties Sinthi was generally the home of a low-income group. Many people stayed in slums. Moreover, the area was neglected by the Government and there was a scarcity of sincere, willing physicians. There was hardly any health clinic in a moderately big area such as Sinthi. The inception of Arogyobhavan was framed with a nominal arrangement of treatment for the sick. The health movement of the locality was run by some well-wishers of Nabajatak under the leadership of Dipen Ghose. Nabajatak Arogyobhavan was founded formally by Dr. Sailen Mitra on 12th December 1962. A gynecological unit was opened on 7th January 1963 offering weekly treatment to poor women at a nominal cost in a small office room of 141/X/1 South Sinthi Road. The first Free Eye operation camp was held in 1975 by Dr. Nihar Munshi. Treatment at a nominal rate was running very successfully and the unit was extended with E.N.T, eye, cardiology, skin, pediatric, dental, orthopedic units to fulfill the demand of local people. The world-famous cardiologist Dr. R. N. Chatterjee attended the patients of Nabajatak Arogyobhavan for so many years. During the eighties due to expansion of out-door units Nabajatak Arogyobhavan needed its own building and a movement of constructing the building continued till 1983 by raising the slogan “ Construct your own Hospital on Your Own ” by the leadership of Dipen Ghosh. Within a few days this health movement was transformed into a civic movement in Sinthi. A historic rally was held on 30th March 1984 with the aim of building a full-fledged hospital in Sinthi. Hundreds of people responded to the sincere address of Nabajatak Sanskriti Parisad. They joined this movement and donated money, furniture, and instruments to Nabajatak Arogyobhavan to the best of their capacity.
After the unfortunate and sudden death of Dipen Ghose Nabajatak Arogyobhavan started its out-door units with a new and extended form in its newly constructed building on his birthday 27th August1987. The patients used to avail themselves of treatments for all kinds of diseases under a single roof at a very nominal cost, from well-known and famous specialist doctors. The doctors were satisfied with their nominal remuneration. Along with treatment of diseases the “Well-Baby Clinic” with preventive care started, too. Thousands of patients were benefitted by the treatment of Dr. R. N. Chatterjee with an E.C.G. machine at the service of Nabajatak Arogyobhavan. The pathology, X-ray and physiotherapy units were also started, and all these continue to run with goodwill at a minimum cost in Nabajatak Arogyobhavan.

The only aim of Nabajatak Arogyobhavan is to materialize the dream of the founder Dipen Ghosh through a joint effort of the local people. Dipen Ghose’s favourite words were: “You have to achieve the rights of your own health by struggling against the intolerable mismanagement and neglect in treatment of diseases.”In this background at present the aim of Nabajatak Arogyobhavan is to give the opportunity for the treatment of all sort of diseases by modern technology and by famous specialist doctors at a nominal cost for all.
Nabajatak Arogyobhavan will try improving and modernizing all the medical units it has started. Nabajatak Arogyobhavan expects the continued support and efforts of the people of Sinthi as always.
